Hot on the heels of that little controversy at Messy Christian’s and ThinkChristian’s blogs about the propriety of taking a break from church, I read this article (ht: ThinkChristian) about the author’s giving up entirely on his church because he had simply grew disillusioned with it.
He is a self-confessed “lover of God and the church”, yet he is now disilluisioned and disenfranchized. “Not necessarily from God, but from the church.” He feels this way because he feels disconnected and distant by pastors and other church leaders who he felt had betrayed his trust. So he stays away from church.

I just came across this interesting blog-post today with the interesting title, “Parade of the Fallen” describing the sad common instance of people who hold leadership positions who “fall” because of they are disgraced by some public “indiscretion.” The blogger, Matt Gough, described this sad state of affairs (the rampant falling of public or prominent leaders in churches) to be partly due to the common practice of Christians to exalt their leaders and put them on a pedestal, forgetting that they are merely human. I have seen this happen time and again. When Christians elevate their leaders to a pedestal, they isolate them. Perhaps, it is not so much the problem that Christians elevate their leaders but that the leaders allow themselves to be elevated. Not only are they isolated, the whole community create a false picture of not only what leadership is all about, but they create a false picture of what community, especially Christian community is all about.
