The antipolar nature of the human spirit - an observation

With so many things happening in the world, and in mine, I have been going through a little bit of emotional upheaval recently. I was overwhelmed at the unfolding of the catastrophe that is still developing in the Gulf Coast area. With so much pain, suffering and tragedy going on, I was a little shocked at people’s reactions to the troubles. While nature has wreaked so much pain, so much suffering, why would any one add to the confusion, and be a part of inflicting more pain? Why would suffering people cause others to suffer more? I am dumbfounded.
I wonder if opportunists who loot at the time of disaster do so because it is a human response to disaster. When the world crumbles around them, rather than reach out to help, they find the first chance for personal profit. Or perhaps this is true only of oppressed people.
