My previous post addressed a verse that is often quoted to suggest that having sexual fantasies, especially in association with masturbation, is sinful. In that post I suggested that using the verse to draw lines about what is, and is not, sin may not be helpful.
Often people think the law is given so that we can make a checklist to show how good we have been behaving or how close to perfection we are. I suggested that the verse, when read in its larger context, was meant to show exactly the opposite. The Law destroys all our smugness about our supposed upright lives. The Law exposes our sinfulness. We ought to look at the Law not to check off and say, “These things I have done from my youth,” but to say, “Forgive me, Father, for I have sinned.”
