Christianity Paved the Way for Science?
7th June 2005
I probably squirmed in my seat. I do remember getting quite uneasy. I can’t remember what else happened, whether I went up to speak with the preacher after the meeting or not. But, what I heard that day, quite a long time ago, had troubled me for a little while.
Recently, I read the same view again online and recalled the time when I was feeling uncomfortable when I heard a preacher telling the congregation proudly that science was birthed within in the West, because of its Christian roots. In other words, it is because of the the Christian influence in Western culture that enabled science to develop the way it did.
Apparently this is quite prevalent: the view that modern science could only have developed in the West because its Christian influence allowed its natural development. Apparently no other civilization in the world could have caused scientific development precisely because they did not have the core undergirding concepts that was only possible because of traditional Christian views.
