When the soul is downcast
12th May 2005
Regular readers of this blog might remember that I have mentioned this before, more than once: Reading the psalms, two in particular, which apparently really are one in the "original", have helped me immensely in dealing with the many moments when I struggled with depression.
Psalms 42 and 43 portray the wild swings of the emotional roller-coaster of one who is distraught and buffeted by the rough seas of circumstances, insecurities and the debilitating effects of a soul tormented. Running through these two psalms is a recurring thought in the form of what looks like a rhetorical pattern that might have been a literary form or poetic rhythm, and yet one that conveys rich meaning and truth.
