I have been thinking through the Mosaic Commandments found in Exodus 20: 1-17, popularly known as the “Ten Commandments”. As I said earlier, there were not really ten Commandments. In fact, some have counted as many as 17, and the phrase “Ten Commandments” itself is not used in the Scriptures.
When Jesus was asked which of the Commandments were the Greatest, it is instructive that He did not even name one of these as Greatest. Rather, Jesus quoted from Deuteronomy 6:4, which, in context, reiterated the giving of the Commandments, and from Leviticus 19:18, which again, in context, reinforced the principles for living in community. Another motley crew has gathered around The Owner’s Manual, and Gary Cruse has pull out all stops to present this week’s Best of Me Symphony, with John Steinbeck as this week’s Guest Conductor.
This week’s medley includes commentary on hair styles to a rant (what else?) on the press and the war to an analysis on moral subjectivism to road rage at the grocery store parking lot involving bad grocery cart driving habits.
My own contribution is Jesus Wept (Note: I am not responsible for the graphic. That honor belongs to Gary! [ahem] … and now, back to our reularly scheduled broadcasting…).
See it all here.

The Series on the Commandments opens with the meditation on what I call “The Heart of the Commandments”. Using the narrative of the “rich young ruler” as a springboard I highlighted the relationship focus of the Commandments.
No Other Gods (The “first” commandment)
No Graven Images (The “second” commandment”)
Do Not Misuse God’s Name (The “third commandment”)
Remember the Sabbath (The “fourth commandment”)
“Two for the Price of One; No, Actually Three for the Price of One” (The “Greatest of the Commandments” - Jesus’ summary of the Law and the Prophets)
Returning to the Commandments (A recap on the posts so far)
